Wednesday 30th January

Well not feeling so great this morning choked with the cold, sore throat and sore ears but I will soldier on so it was off to the dojo to train with Kai Sensei. We started the class off with 10 leg swings forward, 10 sidewards, 10 behind, 10 outside to inside and 10 inside to ouside on both legs. Next we did 40 oizukis on the spot followed by 30 gyakizukis left and then right. Then 40 maigeris on the spot followed by 30 maigeris on the left and then on the right. Next we worked in pairs using the focus pads practicing mawashegeri using front and back legs both side and ushiro mawashegeri again using front leg and back leg on both sides. Next all the sensei's took turn at holding a larger pad and we practiced mawashegeri full speed full power for about 20 sets each leg. I felt sorry for Okamoto Sensei when she was holding the pad as Inada Sensei, Watanabe Sensei, Kai Sensei and Hideyoshi Kagawa Sensei did not hold back at all when striking the pad - she is one tough young lady. We finished the class of with kata Meikyo 4 times to the count slow and one time full speed.

I headed off for a Japanese (spicy) curry for lunch in the hope that it would sweat this ghastly cold away before heading back for a hot shower and a sleep in the afternoon. (I did have a wee ice cream on the way back too I have to confess)

I awoke still not feeling great but decided to head to the 7pm class taught by Okamoto Sensei the class started off with leg swings forward, backward, sidewards and outside to inside each to the count of 10 on both legs. We then paired up and done some leg stretching in preparation for the kicking class we were about to commence. We worked in pairs practicing side snap and thrust kick using our partner as a target - we focused on the foot position in particular. Next using the focus pads practicing maigeri (ball of the foot), maigeri (front of the foot), mawashegeri and ushiro mawashegeri. We finished the class with Tekki Shodan to the count three times and then kata of own choice full speed one time only. ( Meikyo Neidan )

It was time for Pizza and Shakeys as I thought I needed some junk food to help feed the cold I had then it was time for bed.

Tuesday 29th January

Well up and it again to the dojo to train with Inada Sensei we started the class with gyakizuki for the count of 30 both sides and then maigeri to the count of 30 both legs. We moved on to work in pairs using the focus pads working on one minute drills as hard and as fast as possible for the following first we done any tzuki attack, next hooking punches, then uppercuts, next any enpi strike, then mawashegeri both legs. We finished the class with Okamoto Sensei teaching Meikyo Neidan to the count 5 times slow and one time full speed still to the count.

I had a few chores to do after training like washing, pay my last months rent and collect my JR rail Pass so I can have my wee holiday next week travelling to Osaka, Kyoto, Nikko, Hakone, Odabia, Kamakura etc.

I headed to Ueno to collect my railpass and grab a quick bite to eat before heading back to the dojo for the evening sessions.

The 6pm class taught by Inada Sensei started with running forward up the dojo and then runing backwards for 4 sets, next we did side stepping up the dojo and back for 4 sets and then skipping up and skipping backwards for 2 sets. Next was kizamizuki gyakizuki for the count of 30 each side followed by maigeri for the count of 30 each side. We moved up and down the dojo practicing basic khion techniques. Next we done Ju No Kata once to the count and once on our own and then Jion once to the count and once on our own full speed. Finishing the class with light Kumite.

The final session of the day and my 80th session of the trip was taught by Matsue Sensei we started the class with gyakizuki for the count of 40 each side and next maigeri for the count of 40 each side. Next we focused on maigeri rotate to the left side making oizuki to the count of two rotating round each time for the count of 20 and the one set of 10 one count maigeri gyakizuki we then done the same the other direction. This exercise was focusing on the rotation and hip snap. We finished the class working on Heian Godan to the count 3 times followed by one time full speed and then Unsu again we focused on this twice to the count and once half speed - a tricky kata so a lot of discussion throughout this part of the class and I have to say its a tough one for sure.

Monday 28th January

Well a long lye this morning as no Kangeiko so didn't need to be at the dojo until 10.30am.

Next holding the weight again we stepped forward making maigeri kick landing in front stance and then backward kizami maigeri to the count of 7, next in kibidach we did side thrust kick for the count of 4 forwards and backwards then side snap kick in the same format. There were only three students in the class so we each had a turn in the middle practicing the following exercises to the count of 10 - tobi condi oizuki, any two attacks (arms only), any leg attack, any three attacks (arms and legs). We finished the class off with Gojoshihosho once to the count slow and next to the count full speed. Kai Sensei was helping me with counts 2 and 3 where I need to work on hand and feet landing same time - another thing for me to practice this week.

Some lunch in the apartment before heading off to Tokyo Tower for the day.

The Tokyo Tower opened in 1958 ( the same year Brazil won its first World Cup in Football). The Tower is 333 meters in height and the special observatory is located at 250 metres and it weighs 4000 tonnes. After heading up to the special observatory it was time for a late lunch in the Tower food court before heading back to get ready for this evenings session at the dojo.

Sunday 27th January - Final Day of Kangeiko

Today was the final day of Kangeiko so I headed off to the dojo and we headed out for a run at 7am. Today was a litte bit different as we ran to the the Temple to pray and some of the children done some kata at the temple before running back to the dojo so we were an hour instead of our usual 20 minutes. We trained with Kagawa Sensei on our return to the dojo. We started off with 10 forward lunges, then 10 forward lunge gyakizuki, then 10 knee lift into forward lunge, then 10 maigeri forward lunge and finally 10 maigeri forward lunge gyakizuki. Saturday 26th January - Kangeiko Day 6

Kangeiko has been on average 15 students all week but today it was around 40 so much busier as it is the weekend. It was a bitter cold morning but still out for the 7am run and it was a tough one because it was so cold! Back into the dojo to train with Yamaguchi Sensei and what a fantastic session it was. We started the class with oizuki on the spot for the count of 40 then left leg forward we practiced tobi condi oizuki then slide back age uke slide forward gyakizuki to the count of 5 forward and five back for four sets next the same format changing the block to soto uke, uchi uke and gedan bari. Next we practiced maigeri on the spot for the count of 40 then we done maigeri back kekomigeri forward to the count of 4 for four sets, next mawashegeri back then ushiromawashegeri forward for the count of 4 for four sets finishing off with kekomigeri, mawashegrei, front leg ura mawashegeri and then ushiromawashegeri back leg each set to one count for 4 sets. Next we done partner work jodan, chudan, maigeri, kekomageri, mawashegeri  and ushirogeri both legs both partners followed by free style kumite. We finished the class off with kata Jion two times to the count and then once full speed on our own.

As it is Saturday I had the rest of the day to myself result! I was mega tired and my muscles ached from this weeks training so I decided to have some breakfast after training then head back to relax for the rest of the morning and head out later in the afternoon.

I headed out late afternoon to Ikebukero for a few drinks and a nice dinner. Although I was still really tired so after dinner I headed back for a coffee and was in bed for 8pm. The training this week has really tired me out and I still have kangeiko tomorrow to get through.

Friday 25th January - Kangeiko Day 5

On way to the dojo at 6.40am I met Yamaguchi Sensei at the train station so we walked together to the dojo chatting and yet again another mention of my weight loss - surely they have been discussing this in the office. I think Japan is awesome as the men back in Scotland would only ever comment on weight gain ha ha.

Another 7am morning run followed by a class taught by Kai Sensei we started with gyakizuki to the count of 40 each side then kizamizuki gyakizuki to the count of 40 each side. Next we did maigeri, kekomegeri and mawashegri to the count of 30 one count per kick then 10 sets of 3 kicks before switching to other leg and repeating. Next partner work first we done oizuki jodan blocking age uke forward and back with our partner to the count of 20 and then 10 full speed no count (tough with Yamaguchi Sensei as my partner) next we did oizuki chudan blocking soto uke forward and back again for the count of 20 then full speed 10 no count (this time with Matsue Sensei so I am really getting challanged) next was maigeri with gedanbari same format first with Kai Sensei then Yamaguchi Sensei (they aint making this easy for sure). We finished the class with 50 sit ups, 50 back extensions, 50 back extensions side to side, 50 leg lifts and 100 push ups (although I must confess I only managed 80 push ups but this is progress for me).

A quick snack then back to the dojo for the 10.30am session. As I walked to the dojo Kagawa Sensei drove past smiling and waving at me - its a nice friendly feeling here in Tokyo at the dojo for sure. Hideyoshi Kagawa Sensei started the class with tube training first we done gyakizuki for the count of 20 then double gyakizuki for the count of 10 then triple gyakizuki for the count of 10 switching to the other side and repeating. Next we turned to face the other direction with the tube in the pull back hand and we repeated the same format both sides. Next with the tube attached to the right foot we done leg swing front for 10, side for 10, outside to inside for 10 and inside to outside for 10 and again repeated on the other leg. Next maigeri for the count of 10 followed by double maigeri for the count of 10 and then triple maigeri for the count of 10 again repeated on the other side and then turn to face other direction with tube on back leg and repeat exercise for both legs again. Next we lay on our back with the tube attached to our feet and done knee pulling to the chest for the count of 50 then on our stomach pulling feet to bum for the count of 50 we done two sets of each of these exercises. Exactly the class I was hoping for today (thats not a joke). Kanayama Sensei finished the class off with Meikyo to the count twice slow and once full speed and then Meikyo Neidan to the count slow 4 times and once to the count full speed.

Headed off for some lunch and ice cream as I thought I deserved it before resting in preparation for a tough night at the dojo as is every Friday night.

Seafood Gratin
Friday night is always a tough session as its the last session of a hard weeks training, but this week I was going to challange myself to both classes (sessions 16 and 17 of the week). Kanayama Sensei taught the 6pm class we started the class off working on front stance to the count of two forwards for the count of 10 then back for the count of 10 we repeated this exercise twice then one count one stance we done forward for the count of 6 and back for the count of 6 for three sets. Next we done gyakizuki step forward oizuki each punch one count forwards and backwards for the count of 10 then two punches one count forward for the count of 6 then back for the count of six for three sets. We repeated the same format for gyakizuki age uke, gyakizuki soto uke, gyakizuki uchi uke. Next we practiced maigeri forward maigeri back each kick one count for the count of 10 forwards and back then both kicks one count for the count of 5 forward and turn back five times for three sets then again the same format we done snap kick back then thrust kick forward and mawashgeri back ushiro mawashegeri forward. We finished the class with Ju No Kata full speed to the count three times and then kata of your own choice once slow and once full speed. (I choose kata Sochin)

Makita Sensei was teaching the final session of the week we started with 160 squats. Next we done squat step forward oizuki to the count of 10 slow then count of 30 full speed, next squat then forward maigeri for the count of 10 slow then 30 full speed and then squat maigeri oizuki for the count of 10 slow then 30 full speed. Next moving up and down the dojo we done squat position step forward oizuki for the count of 7 and the same going backwards for the count of 7 one time slow and then two sets full speed. Next the same format for maigeri and then maigeri oizuki. Ouch Ouch Ouch!!!!!!!!
Next we done Junro Shodan to the count three times and then one time on our own full speed. Then next Junro Sandan full speed on our own one time only. One student was to do Junro Shodan every time thereafter and the other student Junro Sandan. I was to do whichever Junro Kata Makita Sensei choose one time full speed so next it was Junro Neidan then Junro Godan - Class Finished I made it and can still walk. 17 Sessions done in 5 days so pretty sore but pleased with myself. But no rest this weekend as still got day 6 and 7 Kangekio to complete!

Thursday 24th January - Kangeiko Day 4

Another 7am run then back into the dojo. Before the session started Kagawa Sensei approached me to ask if I was ok and then said that when I came to Japan I was bigger and now much slimmer and he smiled and said good (thumbs up) he said it was because of my hard training. Now Kanayama Sensei stepped forward to teach so I knew I was in trouble after last nights session. We started the class with 50 push ups then kizamizuki gyakizuki to the count of 30 on the right side then 50 more push ups before kizamizuki gyakizuki to the count of 30 on the left side. Another 40 push ups then another 30 kizamizuki gyakizukis on the right side followed by 40 push ups and another 30 kizamizuki gyakizukis on the left side. Next we lifted our knee to chest then forward into the lunge position for the count of 30 followed by maigeri lunge forward to the count of 30. Next we did maigeri back for the count of 30 on the left and right side then kizamimaigeri maigeri 10 on the left side and 10 on the right side. Next we did Ju No Kata twice to the count and once on our own full speed followed by Bassidai twice to the count and once on our own full speed. Next with Okamoto Sensei as my partner we done free style kumite for several minutes before finishing the class with 100 sit ups, 50 back extensions, 50 back extensions side to side rotation and 50 leg lifts. Amazing class tough but loved it.

The 10.30am class was taught by Nagaki Sensei we started with kizamizuki gyakizuki to the count of 30 on both the left and right side. Nagaki Sensei had in previous classes being focusing on my elbow coming off the body before punching and told me that today was much better - so the practice has paid off! Next we practiced the preparation of maigeri kick to the count of 40 each leg then the same for side snap kick and mawashegeri. Next we done maigeri, side snap kick and mawashegeri to the count of 20 (one count per kick) followed by the three kick one count for 5 sets then switched to other leg and repeated. Nagaki Sensei and Yamaguchi Sensei throughout the entire classes were pushing me and helping me to maximise my techniques. We then moved onto to partner work practicing jodan, chudan, maigeri and mawashegeri to the count of 5 blocking and counter attacking on final technique we done this twice. Yamaguchi Sensei then taught Bassidai for the final part of the class again we done twice to the count with Yamaguchi correcting some of my techniques and then once full speed - no pressure with Yamaguchi watching me the entire time. Another fantastic session.

It was time to relax in the afternoon and have some lunch in preparation of the classes this evening.

Before the 6pm class Yamaguchi Sensei approached me to say I was training very hard every day morning and night he looked quite impressed. I think I made a mistake telling him my legs were a little tired though! The 6pm class was taught by Yamaguchi Sensei and Kagawa Sensei. Yamaguchi Sensei started the class with 100 squats then holding in Kibadach stance for the count of 30. Next in kibi dach stance we did 10 oizuki's, 10 double punch and 10 sanbon tzuki's. We then moved on to lift knee to chest into forward lunge for the count of 30 followed by maigeri into forward lunge for the count of 30. ( I do wonder if he would have taught this class if I hadn't told him I had sore legs). Then we practiced oizuki, age uke gyakizuki, soto uke gyakizuki, uchi uke gyakizuki, gedanbari gyakizuki, maigeri, maigeri oizuki, mawashegeri up and down the dojo to the count of 5 forwards and backwards. Then we finished the basics with kekomigeri, mawashegeri, kizamimawashegeri and ushiromawashegeri up and down the dojo for 6 sets. The last section of the class both Kagawa Sensei and Yamaguchi Sensei held the focus pads and we had to attack the pads as they moved around the dojo for about 12 techniques each time for 10 sets. The dojo this evening was full of laughter both Sensei's were having fun with all the students and was nice to see both students and instructors laugh and have fun whilst training hard.

The last session of the day and session number 13 of the week for me was taught by Matsue Sensei and Kagawa Sensei. Matsue started the class off with gyakizuki to the count of 40 followed by kizamizuki gyakizuki to the count of 40 on both legs. Next we done kizamizuki gyakizuki maigeri to the count of 20, maigeri kizamizuki gyakizuki for the count of 20 followed by kizamizuki maigeri gyakizuki for the count of 20 then switched and done the same other side. Then we moved up and down the dojo practicing many basic techniques. The last section of the class was taught by Kagawa Sensei where we done partner work practicing only jodan and chudan tzuki attacks with partner blocking age uke and soto uke and counter attack gyakizuki. First up and down the dojo attacking to the count of 5 partner blocking and countering on last technique we done this several times with different partners and then we practiced attack then partner return same attack and first partner counter attack to the count of 5 up and down the dojo for both techniques again with several partners.

Time for bed !

Wednesday 23rd January - Kangeiko Day 3

7am start again and out for our usual morning run for the Kangeiko.

Afterwards back into the dojo to train with Makita Sensei - the class started with 100 squats in the kiba dach position followed by holding in the kiba dach stance for the count of 30, every exercise thereafter we held the kiba dach stance so it was a hard work out on the legs. We started oizuki for the count of 30, then double punch for count of 30 followed by sanbonzuki for the count of 30. Next we done lifting knee to chest and then landing making oizuki in kibi dach stance for the count of 10 slow then 20 fast. Then we finished with half step over side snap kick for the count of 20 followed by side thrust kick. It was time to practice kata so we focused on Tekki Shodan we done this four times to the count followed by one time full speed. We finished the class with one attack jodan, chudan, maigeri, kekomigeri, mawashegeri, ushirogeri both legs both partner.

I headed back to the dojo for the 10.30am class which was taught by Inada Sensei. I was the only student in the class and as Yamaguchi Sensei left the dojo he smiled at me and said special class ( I was scared ha ha). It was a great class with Inada Sensei where we focused on Gyakuzuki for the count of 20 each side, then maigeri for the count of 20 each side. Next we done gyakuzuki with Okamoto Sensei holding fromt leg so no movement again for the count of 20 each leg. Then we moved onto maigeri with Okamoto Sensei lying on the ground in front of me to ensure I was lifting my knee into the correct position before making the kick again for 20 each side. Next we worked on oizuki, age uke, soto uke, uchi uke, shuto uke forwards and backwards to the count of 6 each way. Okamoto was checking to make sure legs were strong by standing on my back leg, punching and proding my stomach, leg and back muscles to check the stability and power of the techniques. Watanabe Sensei was training alongside me and was being really challenged by Inada Sensei and Hideyoshi Kagawa Sensei. Inada Sensei was impressed with the muscles in Watanabe Sensei's legs so much that he encouraged us all to have a feel - wow thats what you call muscles! Next we worked on maigeri, mawashegeri, side thrust and snap kicks all to the count of 5 each leg forwards and backwards up the dojo - each kick we done slow focusing on accuracy and strenghthing our muscles. Inada Sensei told me I was very strong and very good. Next I worked with Watanabe Sensei where we practiced mawashegeri back leg then front leg, ushiromawashegeri back leg and then front leg each kick for the count of 5 slow and 10 our own count switching over each time - he has very strong kicks my arms will tell you that. I finished the class with Okamoto Sensei doing Gojushihosho again she told me very good and very strong. Watanabe and Okamoto Sensei always asking me how to say things in English and then they are practicing so this is good that I am helping them a little too.

Headed to the dojo for the 6pm class to train with Kanayama Sensei and he was in a fierce mood I could tell. Ooft it was a tough one on my already tired legs and body. We start with 60 lunges, 30 knee lift then lunge forward and then 30  maigeri then lunge forward. Left leg in front stance we did 120 gyakizukis switching to the right leg we did 150 gyakizukis as Kanayama Sensei stopped us after the first 30 and told us to start again. Next it was 120 maigeris on the left and then 120 on the right.
Next we moved up and backward doing 40 oizukis, then 40 maigeris. My legs were shaking and I was running out of energy fast. We then moved onto kata to finish the class we did Ju No Kata 10 times one after the other with no break in between. The children stayed on and did it to the count of Kanayama Sensei this was our rest then again we had to do two times full speed to finish the class.

Kanayama Sensei beat me tonight im sad to say and with no energy left it was only one class for me this evening it was time to head for dinner then bed.

Tuesday 22nd January - Kangeiko Day 2

7am at the dojo and we headed out for the morning run it is really chilly at this time of the morning and out running in only our Gi and trainers brrrrrr! Afterwards straight back into the dojo to train with Nagaki Sensei we done some basic training to start 20 gyakizuki's, 20 kizamizuki gyakizuki, 20 sanbonzuki then repeat other side. Next we done maigeri, mawashegeri, kekomigeri to the count of 40 both left and right side followed by basic techniques up and down the dojo to the count of 5 up and back. We then done Heian Nidan and Heian|Yondan once to the count slow, once to the count fast each and then both full speed one after the other. We moved on to do one attack jodan zuki, chudan zuki, maigeri, mawashegeri both legs both partners with two different partners (mine being Okamoto Sensei and Nagaki Sensei) before finishing the class with 100 sit ups, 100 back extensions and 50 leg lifts.

I headed back to meet Kai Sensei at the dojo at 10.30am as he was taking me to the Tekiyo Budokan as Kagawa Sensei had invited me to attend. I have to be honest and say I was a little nervous as not too sure what to expect. I arrived at Teikyo Budokan around 12 o'clock and Kai Sensei introduced me to some of the students before heading off. It was a surreal situation me in the Teikyo Budokan on the first day of training with the Teikyo team which included both the World Team Kata and Individual Female kata champions. The new venue was huge and a really fantastic dojo indeed was really impressed. I have been informed that this is thee best dojo now in the whole of Japan!

Kagawa Sensei arrived at around 1pm and we had to change into our Gi's and start to stretch and prepare for training. The TV Cameras were setting up to shoot the training session and do some interviews. Kagawa Sensei shouted me over so he could introduce me to the crew and was very proud to say I was his student and had trained at Kangeiko with him this morning and was now at the Teikyo Budokan for this very special day. I spent a bit of time chatting with them about being in Japan and karate in Scotland before heading back to prepare to train with the team.

Kagawa Sensei and the TV crew were ready so the training began!!!!!!!!!!

We lined up and started with basic training gyakizuki, oizuki, oizuki applying tobi kondi, attacking forwards punching and kicking (own choice of techniques) after blitzing this for 10 minutes we paired up and moved on to working on the tubes in pairs one person holding tube in right hand and attacking forward three punches then turning round and attacking backwards full speed, tube on right foot attacking forward any hand and leg techniques and again turning and going back in the other direction and tube around waste again any hand and leg techniques attacking backwards again. We did many of these drills switching the tube over between each set. Finally we moved on to Kumite drills up and down the dojo firstly on your own as many attacks forward and backwards for I think 6 sets before moving on to work in pairs one person attacking other person moving back to defend then returning back up the dojo. The Teikyo students were fantastic with me encouraging me to push and drive all the time was really great to spend time training with them. The session was called to a close and we lined up and the TV Interviews began.

After the main interview section was complete Kagawa Sensei excused all the team except 5 members who stayed for further demonstrations and interviews.

After I was changed Kagawa Sensei shouted me over and asked me if I would like to stay for the remainder of the day and I accepted without any doubt. Whilst the ladies were being interviewed along with Kagawa Sensei I sat with the WKF World Champion Kata Team chatting and watching them practice for the demonstration they would be filmed doing later that day.

Around 5.15pm the filming was complete and a few of the guys from the television crew came over to chat and asked for my contact details as they would like me to go and get an interview in the studio about my time in Japan studying Karate! If not before I come home in March they will invite me when I am back out in July.

Kagawa Sensei gave me a lift to the station so I could head home for the evening - I was too tired, hungry and late for training tonight so it was dinner and then time to relax. Had difficulty sleeping as was buzzing from todays experience.

I think this had to be one of the best days ever in my karate life so far and words cant really describe how that feels!

Monday 21st January - Kangeiko Day 1

Well training session 57 - I arrived at the dojo at 6.45am we headed out for a 20 minute light jog round Sugamo in only my Gi and my new running shoes and it was rather chilly. Afterwards straight back into the dojo to train with Inada Sensei we done some basic training to start 20 gyakizuki's, 20 kizamizuki gyakizuki, 20 gyakizuki kizamizuki then repeat other side. Next we done 20 leg swing to front, 20 to the side and 20 to the back each leg followed by 20 maigeri's, 20 kizamimaigeri maigeri and 20 maigeri kizamimaigeri again each leg. We then done Ju No Kata and all the Heian Katas once to the count slow, once to the count fast and then once full speed no count. We moved on to do one attack jodan zuki, chudan zuki, maigeri, kekomigeri, mawashegeri, ushirogeri both legs both partners before finishing the class with 100 sit ups, 100 back extensions and 50 push ups.

I headed to Jonathans for a light breakfast and to relax reading my book before the 10.30am session began.

Back in the dojo at 10.30 to train with Kai Sensei - we started with 100 squats slowly to the count and then done some stretching exercises to loosen off the legs. We done 20 maigeri's 20 kekomigeris and 20 ushirogeris each leg to the count. Next we moved on do pad work in pairs practicing mawashegeri with both the ball of the foot and the front of the foot for the count of 10 each both legs, next ushiro-mawashegeri to the count of 20 each leg and finally spining ushirogeri for the count of 20 each leg. My partner was Okamoto Sensei and she complimented my spinning Ushirogeri and also encouraged Watanabe Sensei and Kai Sensei to watch and they all paid compliments so very pleased with myself. We worked on the kata Kankudai twice to the count slow and one time full speed. A few parts that need to be worked on but Okamoto Sensei complimented me on the improvements that have come over the last few weeks as I have addressed several things pointed out to me and again it was nice for
this to be noticed at least I know I am going in the right direction.

However, just before the class finished the biggest compliment of all came when Okamoto Sensei pointed out that " I was getting slimmer since being in Japan" RESULT !!!!!!!

Back home to catch a few ZZZZ's before the evening classes.

Arrived at the dojo at 6pm to train with Kai Sensei, before the class started Kagawa Sensei asked me if I would like to attend the Opening Event for the Teikyo Budokan tomorrow - I accepted with great delight. He is very proud of this event I can tell and he was telling me that it would be fantastic day with Teikyo Team demos and Interviews as the television crews would be there to film (not only Japanese but International TV). He told me to bring my Gi so I am going to get to train alongside them - AWESOME!

We started the class of with some basic training before moving onto kumite. We started with partner work doing oizuki jodan attack tobi kondi for the count of 5 with the other partner only blocking the attack and then return it other way, next same attack this time block and counter attack both partners for count of 5. Then both full speed no count. We done the same for oizuki chudan attack also. Then we were to change partner any five attacks other person block counter then return back, we done this with several partners. We moved into groups one person at the front of the line and we were to score a point with Watanabe being the referee, we had to do this with everyone in the line then rotating next person in front it was a fun and challenging class really enjoyed.
We finished the class with Junro Shodan, Junro Sandan and then kata of your own choice.

The final session was taught by Watanabe Sensei again we focused on basic punching and kicking techniques. We practiced maigeri with the back foot against the wall to make sure we were returning our foot into the correct position without shortening the stance - seems such a basic exercise but not so easy I can assure you. We finished the class off practicing Oizuki, gyakuziki switch leg gyakuzuki for count of 10 and mawashegeri on the pads and we done many sets of each always focusing on developing the techniques to be faster and stronger.

Only day I have an opportunity to have a long lye and I am wide awake at 6am nightmare!

Friday 18th January

I woke up knowing today was going to be a challange as I was still tired from yesterday and my body ached but no rest for the wicked it was up dressed and back to the dojo for some more training.
Kanayama Sensei taught the first session today we started with the front of our foot touching the wall and our knee pressing against the mirror in a front stance and worked on hip rotation to the count of 60 each leg. Next we moved back from the mirror and in a front stance done age uki gyakizuki, soto uke gyakizuki, uchi uke gyakizuki, gedanbari gyakizuki then kizamizuki gyakizuki each to the count of ten on both legs. Again back against the mirror and facing to the right side in front stance we practiced maigeri, kekomigeri and mawashegeri each to the count of four per technique and ten times each then turned to face the left side and repeated on the opposite leg.
We finished the class doing both Kankudai and Jion each kata twice slowly to the count and once full speed on our own. Kanayama Sensei was correcting and explaining parts of each kata along the way.
It was nearly the weekend so treated myself to a wee Italian lunch and a wonder round Nippori before coming home for a snooze in preparation of Makita Sensei's class tonight.
I done a little bit of stretching and training in the apartment before heading to the dojo. Makita Sensei really knows how to hurt my legs and I think he gets pleasure out of it too. The class started holding a 7.5 kilo weight doing 90 squats, hold in squat position for the count of 60, 90 lunges, hold front stance for count of 30 each leg, hold in back stance for count of 30 each leg and finally kibidach for count of 30. Next we moved up and down the dojo to the count of 8 up and 8 back doing front stance for three sets still holding the 7.5 kilo weight then we put the weight down and done 8 oizuki's forward and backwards full speed to the count followed by 8 maeigeri's forward and back to count of followed by 8 maigeri oizuki's again forward and back to the count. Back with 7.5 kilo weight we did back stance up and down the dojo for the count of 8 each way for three sets, then without the weights we did shuto uke forward and back for the count of 8 followed by shuto uke nukite for count of 8 forwards and backwards. Final exercise with the weight was kibidach forward and back to the count of 8 for 3 sets then we did side snap kick for the count of 5 each way followed by side thrust kick for the count of 5 each way.
We moved onto kata where we focused on Tekki Shodan we done the kata 4 times slow with the count and 1 time fast with the count. Only myself and one other student in the class he was asked to do Tekki Shodan full speed 3 times and I was to do Sochin three times full speed.
Amazing class but if I am being in honest no pain as yet as I am numb from the waist down which I think can only be a good thing at this time!

Finished with the weights next with a towel under our feet we had to place our hands on the floor and pull our body holding the towel under our feet at all times up and down the dojo for three sets that was tough! Next it was 50 sit ups, 50 crunches knees and elbows touching, 50 back extensions, 50 back extensions rotating side to side and finally roll the towel up and balance the ball of foot on towel and pulse up and down each leg we done 100! The class finished with kata Yamaguchi Sensei taught Jiin, Nagaki Sensei taught Bassisho and Hideyoshi Kagawa Sensei taught Wankan each Kata we done twice slow to the count and once full speed to the count.
I had some lunch on they way back to the apartment and decided to have a relaxing day as I was going to a double training session this evening and needed all my energy.
I headed back to the dojo for the 6pm class which was taught by Yamaguchi Sensei we started the class of with Gojushihosho we done the kata slowly to the count three times and once to the count full speed with Yamaguchi Sensei explaining the kata movements then next we did Kankusho again three times to the count slowly and then one time to the count full speed. We finished the session off with partner work where one partner attacked ten times any attack and then switched to other partner and finally again any ten attacks with the other partner blocking and counter attacking.
Next class was taught by Matsue Sensei we started with 40 Gyakizuki's each side then 40 Maigeri's each leg. We then had towels under our feet and practised front stance, back stance and kibidach stance. Wedneday 16th December

It was time for Karen to head back to airport after our fantastic 17 day holiday and we made the most of it we have done lots of sightseeing, Disneyland, Disneysea, Sumo Wrestling - it was great!
We head back to the airport at 8am as it takes 1 hour 15 mins by train direct to the terminal on arrival we notice the flight delayed for one hour due to the monday snowfall. We checke her in get her boarding passes and I left her at the security gate to head back to Scotland. I headed back to Nippori alone for the final 6.5 weeks of my adventure.
I headed back had lunch and then just spent the day washing, cleaning and getting myself settled back into my wee pad.
I decided as I had missed last nights session and this mornings I was going to do a double session tonight. On route to the dojo I met Matsue Sensei who appeared to be worried about me he thought I was sick as I had missed two classes since my arrival but I assured him all was well however, I felt like I had been caught out for skiving ha ha. So I headed to the dojo for 6pm class with Yamaguchi Sensei we started with 80 squats, 80 sit ups, 80 back extensions, 80 back extensions side to side rotation, 80 rotating side to side sit ups, 120 push ups. We then done front stance up and backwards to the count of 8 squatting in the middle position to the count of 8 each way for 3 sets followed by the same applying oizuki and then the same for the count of four each way again 3 sets applying tobi kondi. We then done front stance squat in the middle then lift knee to chest before landing in from stance again to the count of 8 up and back for three sets then we done the same again applying maigeri kick and then to the count of 4 for three sets applying tobi kondi.
We finished the class with partner work Gohon Kumite - Jodan Zuki, Chudan Zuki, Maigeri, Mawashegeri and then again the same techniques applying tobi kondi.
The 7pm class was taught by Kanayama Sensei and I was the only student in attendance. The class started off with tube training doing 40 gyakuzukis each side then turning to face the other direction doing 40 kizamizuki gyakizukis again each side we then done 10 maigeri's, 10 kekomigeri's and 10 mawashegeri's each leg again turning to face the opposite directions and repeating the exercise again. Then with the tube around our waist we done khion for the count of 8 forwards and backwards - oizuki, sanbon zuki, age uke gyakizuki, soto uke gyakizuki, uchi uke gyakizuki, shuto uke, maigeri, maigeri oizuki, mawashegeri, mawashegeri gyakizuki. We then practiced Junro Shodan , Junro Neidan and Junro Sandan to finsh. Was a tough class under pressure to keep up to the count and eyes all on me when perfoming all the Katas each twice at the end of the class. Loved it though but rather exhuasted so its time to rest for tomorrows sessions.

Tuesday 15th December

Headed off the dojo to train with Okamoto this morning it was a quiet class with only myself and one white belt adult student.

The class focused on basic techniques for most of the class. We started with standing on the spot in natural stance punching one count one technique for the count of 30 then the same for maigeri kick on the spot. Then we done the following techniques to the count of 30 for each technique each side. gyakizuki, kizamizuki gyakizuki, maeigeri, mawashegeri, any two kicks. We then practiced front stance, back stance and kibidach stance to the count of two each technique (with towels under our feet) we done these to the count of 8 forward and backward for 3 sets for each stance. We took the towels away and practiced oizuki, sanbonzuki, age uki gyakizuki, soto uki gyalizuki, uchi uke gyakizuki,  shoto uke, maigeri, mawashegeri, keagigeri, kekomigeri. The class finished with 150 sit ups, 200 back extensions, 120 pushups.

It was Karens last night in Tokyo so I decided to take the night off training we were going to do a few bits of shopping, pack her stuff up for the journey home and then head to Hard Rock Cafe for her farewell Tokyo dinner. We ate so much food it was delicious before heading back to pack up Karens final bits as it is an early departure tomorrow morning.

Monday 14th January

Its a bank holiday in Japan today - Coming of Age day to celebrate anyone who is going to become 20 in the year ahead and celebrate them coming into Adulthood.

It had been torrential rain all night and when I woke for training the rain was still bouncing off the ground. I wrapped up and braved the walk to the dojo for the first session and on arrival I was told that as it was a bank holiday the schedule had changed as it was the new year seminar today at noon till one oclock followed by an New Year Party. So I wrapped up to head back to apartment and on the walk back the rain was turning to Snow.

Karen and I had planned to go a wee shopping day but the snow was getting heavier so I decided to go back to the noon session and we would make a decision what to do when I returned depending on the weather situation.

I headed back to the dojo for noon and the snow was getting really heavy by this point and starting to lye.

I am so glad I went back to the opening seminar as it was fantastic around 80 people training (all ages all grades) and the Teikyo University team were there training too. The Teikyo team done the Kankudai demonstration followed by the Teikyo team kata demo of Unsu. They were fantastic and it was great to watch the demos and train alongside them too. Kagawa Sensei taught the session and we done some basic techniques, followed by Heian Shodan for the children and Jion for the seniors then we done one attack partner work again children first followed by the adults. The class finished with everyone with the exception of the Teikyo Team to spar with the Sensei's - I choose to partner Kanayama Sensei I was buzzing after this session. Looking forward to all the training in the New Year ahead.

I stayed for a short while at the party but then headed back to the apartment in the now heavy snow which was lying think on the ground. I stopped for a few supplys on the way back some snacks and of course beer.

We decided it was crazy outside so we headed to the seven eleven for some dinner and extra beers and we had a wee party to ourselves.

A little delicate today after last nights partying but we had to get ourselves ready to head off to Ryogoku to the Kokugikan Arena to watch the Sumo Wrestling Tournament.

Entrance into Arena
We met up with the tour group where we given a bit of the background to the Sumo Wrestling and explanation of the rules before heading into the arena to watch the Makuuchi Rikishi ceremonial entrance - where the senior division step into the ring in their decorated ceremonial aprons and form a circle facing the crowd. Next the Grand Champions make a ceremonial entrance into the ring accompianed by two attendants. The champions clap their hands and stamp their feet drawing spirited calls from the crowd. Then we watched the Makuuchi Bouts which is the battle between the highest division Rikishi. This was followed by a Bow Dance Ceromony to close the event for the day.

Friday 11th January

It was the first early session at the dojo of 2013 and only two of us in the class myself and Mami Yoshikoshi. Nagaki Sensei taught todays class and I knew it would be tough as there was nowhere to hide.

We started the class off working on the rotation of our hips to the count of 30 each side then we worked on the hip rotation with Gyakizuki then Kizamzuki each punch one count for three sets of 10 then two punches one count again for three sets of 10 - we done this both side. Next we worked on maigeri to the count of two first count to make kick and balance on one leg holding the position then the second count to place leg back and lock in a front stance - again we did this for three sets of 10 then one count for full kick for two sets of 10 all repeated on the other leg also. The next part of the class we worked on oizuki, sanbon zuki, age uki gyakizuki, soto uki gyakizuki, uchi uke gyakizuki, shuto uki, maigeri, side thrust and snap kicks forward and backwards up and down the dojo focusing on elbow position, knee position, landing hand and feet together, techniques going direct to the target, solid stances. Focusing on the basic techniques is tough and I have a few things I need to work on to improve my techniques. Lots of feedback from Nagaki Sensei which I appreciate as I came here to train hard and develop so I will need to go back to the basics and fix things out now. We finished the class off with Ninjishiho twice to the count and then one time full speed. At the end of todays class Mami done the dojo code and I was on my own to repeat this and I got it correct and for the first time I felt completely confident. Nagaki Sensei was very impressed and came up to me and the end of the session to tell me so and I felt very pleased with myself as it has been tough to not only learn it in Japanese but to have the confidence to be able to speak it out alone in the dojo.

After lunch Karen and I decided to head back to Asakusa to the temple again because when we went last week it was packed out with all the Japanese people praying at the temple with it being New Year so the main strip and temple area were blocked off. We wondered around and took in the busy atmosphere and looked around the market stalls to pick up a few souveniers.

Main Gate to the Temple

Temple Gardens

Market Strip

We then headed to Ueno for a walk around for an hour to see what else was in Ueno other than the Ueno Park tourist area and we found a nice little Irish bar so we will be coming back here on Saturday afternoon for sure!

It was time for the evening session so I headed back to the dojo to train with Makita Sensei again there were only 2 of us training in the dojo myself and a white belt so Makita Sensei asked me if I was ok to head the class and although I smiled and said yes I was freaking out that I would actually have to do the dojo code at the end of the class with no help! The class started with 50 sit ups, 100 leg lifts, 100 back extenstions, 100 back extensions side to side and 100 push ups. We then worked on front stance, back stance and kibidach stance with towels under our feet to the count of 2 each stance we done each stance forwards and backwards for the count of 8 each way for 3 sets and then two sets each stance one count. In between each stance we then took the towels away and focused on full speed with the stance applying basic techniques. We finished the class off with Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan and Heian Sandan each slowly to the count and then twice full speed. The class finished and it was time for me to do the Dojo Kun and although it was only me and one other student the pressure was on in front of Makita Sensei and Kanayama Sensei but I pulled it off with no error phew!!!!!

Karen came to meet me at Sugamo and we headed to Jonathans for dinner and a few beers and then headed back to have another few in the apartment to finish off another great day in Tokyo!

Thursday 10th January

It was time to leave the world of Disney

Inside the Monorail
Disney Resort Cruiser
A walk around the shopping mall and a quick bite to eat and it was time to head back to Nippori as it was time for me to get back to the dojo for this evenings session with Kagawa Sensei.

First session back of 2013 and Kagawa Sensei was teaching the class it was a struggle to motivate myself after my holiday but it was time to get back to it for sure! According to Karen anyway but to be fair I think she was just sick of the sight of me and wanted peace.

The session started with gyaki tzuki then age uki one count per one technique for the count of 10 then one count for both techniques to the count of 10 followed by gyaki tzuki soto uki, gyaki tzuki uchi uke and gyaki tzuki gedan bari this was then repeated on the other side. Next we done kizami maegeri, maegeri, kizami mawashegeri, mawashergeri, kizami ushirogeri, ushirogeri, then side snap to the left followed by side thrust to the right we did all these to the count of 10 for one technique then to the count of 10 for double technique. We then done all the Heian Katas once to the count and then once full speed on our own with no breaks inbetween all 10 katas oooffftttt. We finished the class with one attack kumite jodan, chudan, maigeri, kekomigeri, mawashegeri and ushirogeri both legs we done this with two partners then we done this again twice but only counter any leg attack. The final part of the class we focused on age uki gyaki tzuki where our opponent attacked double punch and we used the preparation hand as a block (therefore double block) we done 10 attacks each person and that was the first class of 2013 complete.

Wednesday 9th January

Another Buffet Breakfast and it was time to head off to Disneysea.

We had seven areas within Disneysea to cover - the Mediterranean Harbour, the American Waterfront, Port Discovery, Lost River Delta, Arabian Coast, Mermaid Lagoon and Mysterious Island.

First we headed into Turtletalk which was a humorous chat with Crush the Sea Turtle it was more of a laugh that he spoke Japanese and we had no clue as to what was going on but had to sit through a 15 minute show. Not as traumatic as yesterdays start to the day though! (Karen has still not forgiven me for that).

I headed into Storm Rider which was a simulator heading through a storm in an aircraft it was awesome fun but a tad scary for me though! Next I headed onto the Aquatopia which was a watercraft for a wild and twirling adventure through rocks and whirlpools and my last ride of the day was Jasmines flying carpets.

Aquatopia

We watched the Legend of Mythica display - The Disney Characters unlock the gateway to the world of Mythica and meet fabulous creatures such as dragons and unicorns - before heading off on Sinbads Storybook Voyage, The Magic Lamp Theatre and the musical production of Under the Sea at the Mermaid Lagoon Theatre along with many other Disneysea Adventures.

The day ended with the Fantasmic display - Mickey Mouse as the sorcerer's apprentice uses his powers of imagination to creature a magical world of fantasy on the waters of the Mediterranean Harbour. The Fantasmic Display was out of this world and probably my favourite part of the whole Disney Experience.
